Caring for Your Skin Type

Choosing the best products and skin care regimens will keep your skin looking and feeling good, no matter what type of skin you have. Ourskin type Tulsa, OK, dermatologist, Dr. Lynn Anderson, shares a few skin care guidelines you'll want to keep in mind.

Stay away from harsh products if you have normal skin

A mild cleanser and moisturizer offer the ideal way to care for normal skin. "Normal" means that your skin isn't oily, dry or sensitive. Harsh products are unnecessary and can irritate your skin. Even though your skin may be normal, breakouts and uneven skin texture can occur if you don't clean it regularly or sleep in your makeup.

Oily skin requires more frequent washing

Washing your face too often can dry out your skin, but dryness isn't a concern if your skin is oily. Washing with a mild cleanser twice a day removes skin oils that can clog your pores and cause acne. If you do develop acne, over-the-counter topical medications that contain benzoyl peroxide or retinoids may help keep pores from clogging. If your acne doesn't clear up, it's time to schedule a visit in our Tulsa office. Stubborn acne may need treatment with prescription topical medications, oral or topical antibiotics, or other types of treatments, such as chemical peels or blue light therapy.

Dry skin requires tender care

Dry skin can quickly become irritated if you use harsh products on it or scrub too hard. Keep your skin supple and smooth by using products designed to hydrate and moisturize your skin. Avoid hot or prolonged showers and baths and use longer-lasting creams and ointments instead of lotions on your body.

Spot treatments can improve combination skin

It's hard to know which products to use when your forehead is oily, but your chin is dry. After you clean your skin with a mild cleanser, address each part of your face separately. There's no need to use an intensive moisturizing product on your entire face when your chin in the only area that needs a little help.

A good skin care regimen and a daily application of sunscreen will help your skin look its best. If you have skin concerns, schedule an appointment with our Tulsa, OK, dermatologist, Dr. Anderson, by calling (918) 728-3100.
